At least six colleges in Downtown Brooklyn are home to almost 60,000 students, the Post reports, meaning that the neighborhood boasts more matriculates than Cambridge. The stats were toted by officials hoping to spur economic growth in the neighborhood.

From 2003 to 2010, Downtown added 12,000 private-sector jobs, an increase of almost 20 percent. In January, 21 buildings in Downtown were landmarked, making it the city's first "skyscraper historic district." (Real estate types opposed the designation, for fear it would limit development.)

The colleges include LIU, the Polytechnic Institute of NYU, St. Francis College, Brooklyn Law School, the New York City College of Technology and SUNY Empire State College.
