32. Barbara StanwyckApologies to
Funny Girl, but Stanwyck is most certainly are favorite Brooklyn Barbara (and/or “Barbra”). Not only was she one of the most beautiful, charming women to ever grace the silver screen, little Ruby Catherine Stevens was part Canadian [ed. note: this matters to
some> one of us]. Bouncing around with brother in various foster homes (her mom died when she was four and her dad ran off to Panama), Ruby went from frequent runaway to self-sufficient mistress of odd jobs, including dressmaker, card-filer, and package-wrapper—but she was just too luminous to stay among the normals. Her first break was as a legendary Ziegfeld girl, the minor leagues for would-be starlets, but what really changed the life of Barbara Stanwyck (her stage name was a composite of fellow actors names) was her casting by Frank Capra in Ladies of Leisure. She went on to star in classics like The Lady Eve, Double Indemnity and Christmas in Connecticut.
