The 5 Best Free Shows This Weekend
Hey, it’s fall. It’s time to save money — we still need a new winter coat — but we want to go out. What to do? Well, thank god we leave in New York City, where the abundance of good music means that, heck, a lot of the times they’re giving it away for free. After the jump, our favorite free shows to check out this weekend.
1. 9/13 Elle King, Grace Weber @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
You may remember Grace Weber from one of our 5 Questions With posts earlier this month, but now you can catch her live at Brooklyn’s most infamous (only?) night bazaar. This show is sure to be something of a trip back in time — she’ll be double-heading with smoky soulstress Elle King. Come dressed up and ready to Feel Things.
2. 9/13 Atlas Sound @ Greenwood Park
Things are sure to be psychedelic tonight, when Atlas Sound takes the stage alongside kindred psych-rock acts Ducktails and Msa Ysa as part of the Bonfire Sessions. RSVP here for free entrance. BYO-‘mallows.
3/ 9/13 Gemma Ray @ Rough Trade
Ever since Rough Trade opened its NYC doors, they’ve been giving us an endless onslaught of super good, super free live shows. Gemma Ray continues this tradition. Her catchy tunes, singular vocal stylings, and hummable choruses are sure to deliver tonight.
4. 9/13 Widowspeak @ The Lot in LIC
We’ve already waxed romantic about Widowspeak’s characteristic, smoky sound — so let it suffice for us to say: don’t miss them playing, for free, outdoors, and all day long at this (sure to be one of the last) great outdoor musical events of the season. Let’s go out with a bang!
5. 9/14 Hazmat Modine @ Pioneer Works
The outdoor courtyard of Red Hook’s one-of-a-kind space, Pioneer Works, is worth going to even when there’s not free music filling it up with mystical joy and laughter. The fact that one-of-a-kind jazz-folk-world-fusion artist Hazmat Modine will also be raising the roof with their noisy, super danceable tunes is just the cherry on top. Don’t miss this one!
