Addressing PCOS Without Birth Control
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, an endocrine system disorder, has become a common problem for many women. Some symptoms of PCOS may include irregular menstrual cycles, polycystic ovaries, acne, weight gain, high insulin, excess facial/body hair, pelvic pain, decreased sex drive and stress/anxiety. There are many intricacies in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) recommendations and treatments for PCOS. We recommend treatment by a licensed, nationally board certified practitioner specializing specifically in women’s health conditions. This does not replace care of your regular physicians. In fact, a great TCM provider will work together with your doctors!
What you can do:
- TCM and Acupuncture. It is said the cause of PCOS is unknown but TCM has a different point of view. Read our full post here to learn more.
- No processed foods and sugar. At the grocery store, stay in the perimeter. Almost anything in an aisle (in a box, can or jar) contains additives, sugars or preservatives that promote inflammation. Step away from the pasta, white bread and soda! Watch our video on nutrition. Also, warm food is good food. From a TCM perspective, when you put cold/raw food into your body, you use energy to digest it and extra energy to “cook” it. Ice water, cold beverages and raw veggies are more difficult for the body to warm and metabolize. Instead opt for room temp water & steamed veggies.
- Avoid Dampness. Dampness can invade the body through internal or external factors caused by food and your environment. Watch our video on dampness.
- Exercise in a way that doesn’t overwhelm your body. Excessive cardio & exercise pushes blood to the muscles but takes blood away from the uterus, which is where it is needed for regulating your cycle. Gentle, consistent exercise is recommended. Yoga (not hot yoga), Qi Gong and Tai Chi.
