Fight Election Fear: See (and Hear) the Best in Art This Week
A weekly compendium of mostly Brooklyn-based, always edifying art events.
99¢ PLUS GALLERY: TELEVISION
A big 22-person show, curators Sarah Largess and B. Thom Stevenson bring together a bunch of works in greyscale—creating the feeling of being in the fuzz—to talk about viewing, being viewed, tuning in, and dropping out. This show also marks the announcement that 99¢ Plus Gallery will close on December 18, with this show: save the date for an “epic goodbye party” on January 20, 2017, and keep your eyes out for a new project at 238 Wilson this spring.
Opening: Monday, October 7 7:00PM — 10:00PM; Exhibition through December 18.
MOUNTAIN GALLERY / COMMON PEOPLE: FUTURE HISTORIES — NICHOLAS CUEVA & ROBIN KANG
Critic Jerry Saltz called Nicholas Cueva “A modern cave painter,” adding, “I love this guy’s work.” The cave painter appears in a two-person show with Robin Kang, who will show her curiously digital, hand-woven cotton hangings this Friday at Mountain, a Bushwick apartment gallery, in a show organized by Common People.
Opening: Friday, November 4 7:00PM — 9:00PM.
GREENPOINT PUBLIC LIBRARY: DANCE DOCUMENTS 1012-5093 — PHOEBE BERGLUND
Almost maniacal in her mission to capture the movements of dance, Phoebe Berglund takes the clay tiles she danced on in Rite of Spring (photographs of which appeared in Ousia, at Unisex Gallery) a step further, again, into the archives of the library. After her exhibition, at the end of December, the Greenpoint Public Library will be completely demolished and then painstakingly rebuilt. Appropriate.
On view through November 9.
PARK CHURCH CO-OP: COMPLINE
Strictly speaking, this a group of people singing really old church music; I argue that it’s much more. Compline is derived from the Latin completorium, and, in the Christian tradition, it’s the service designed to complete the day. The music has a soothing, drawn-out call-and-response format, and in this venue, with candles and incense, it has a lot in common with performance art (but much less awkward).
Performance: Thursday, November 3 (and every first Thursday of the month) 8:30PM.
