The Best Old Movies on a Big Screen This Week: NYC Repertory Cinema Picks, August 10-16
Directed by William Cameron Menzies
Legendary art director Menzies helmed this science fiction “B” about a boy who suspects his town is under siege by aliens. The film’s unexpected surrealism is clearly a result of its shoestring budget—stock footage appears throughout and several bare-walled sets are redressed and re-used, lending most scenes an unsettling sense of deja vu. The hallucinatory ending montage, with its repetitive use of shots, adds to the film’s paranoid dreamscape. A.J.
