Get Ready for a Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Art Exhibit in Williamsburg
It’s hard to say, firsthand, whether comedy duo Matt Harkins and Viviana Olen’s Kickstarter to launch “The Olsen Twins Hiding From the Paparazzi” exhibit is a legitimate plea for funding or just an elaborate gag on the twins for skipping out on Netflix’s Full House spin-off, Fuller House. But by all accounts, the exhibit, which will feature the Olsen twins shielding themselves behind bags, Starbucks’ cups, and their Blackberries [Ed. note: lol] is real, making its existence even more amusing.
Harkins and Olen—who are maybe the last two people you would want to have as your neighbors considering the success following the opening of the Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan 1994 Museum in the hallway of their Williamsburg apartment last year—have now curated 20 paintings of Chicago-based artist Laura Collins’s series on the Olsens, as their way of providing a “very important cultural exhibit” to the neighborhood.
“Laura’s paintings tell the story of how, using a patented system of approximately 700 lbs of beautiful clothes, strategically high collars, face sized bags, and tiny house sized sunglasses, the Olsens are able to hide themselves from unwanted photographers,” the duo wrote on their Kickstarter page. “In fact, you can never be sure a photo of an Olsen is actually an Olsen. It could just be a showroom rack of unattainable clothes rolling down the sidewalk. This level of beauty is present in each and every one of Laura’s paintings.”
The duo are hoping to raise $9,500 for the interactive art gallery that is said to also feature cultural programs like a Real Housewives Symposium, a “curated collection of clips and a moderated panel discussion featuring self-described experts from each branch of the Housewives tree” and a reading of their screenplay that is based on the alleged cross-country road trip Michael Jackson, Liz Taylor and Marlon Brando took in a rental car post 9/11, so they could host the show in an alternate location that would not upset their landlord.
