Who Came Before Gaspar Noé? Ten Auteur-Porn Milestones of the 21st Century
9 Songs (2004)
British eclecticist Michael Winterbottom went full provocateur for this anemic 70-minute digital feature, which bowed at Cannes. The film putatively documents a year-long relationship but actually plays like a low-rent concert-footage compilation. It’s penetrating only in the genital sense—naturally, the majority of the sex here is real. The London-based central couple, Kieran O’Brien and Margo Stilley, attend live shows put on by a series of mediocre alt-rock bands toeing the mainstream-indie divide (Dandy Warhols, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, etc.), then afterwards they go home to fuck.
