Who Came Before Gaspar Noé? Ten Auteur-Porn Milestones of the 21st Century
Nymphomaniac (2013)
Fresh off depicting genital mutilation in Antichrist (2009), Danish prankster Lars von Trier mounted a two–volume, four-hour film period film about a woman (young Joe is played by Stacy Martin, and the older version by Charlotte Gainsbourg) who will stop at nothing simply to have a lot of sex. Most of the really explicit stuff here was apparently accomplished by body-double compositing, but von Trier has nonetheless long promoted the cause of plain old sex on-screen. Around the turn of the 21st century, his Zentropa production company was behind a trilogy of female-skewing films (Constance, Pink Prison, and All About Anna) that were nominated for AVN Awards.
