Best Neighborhood Restaurant: Concord Hill
What makes a great neighborhood restaurant? Well, it helps if it’s a place where you feel as comfortable as you do in your own kitchen; where you’re greeted with a smile, and a steady hum of cheerful conversation surrounds you as you choose from a menu full of the kind of food that you always want to eat, at a price point that allows you to return over and over without breaking the bank. Find a place like this, and just try not to make it a second home. Or rather, don’t fight it after all: Let down your resistance and embrace the joys of being a regular. At least, that’s been our attitude when it comes to Williamsburg’s Concord Hill.
Opened last fall by longtime friends and colleagues Kate Sheldrick and Szoke Schaeffer (native New Yorkers, the two attended LaGuardia High School together and worked for years at farm-to-table stalwart Westville), Concord Hill has an instantly welcoming environment. The intimate dining room is graced with large windows and a dutch door, and filled with rough-hewn wooden tables handmade by the owners, as well as charming touches like pottery made by Schaeffer’s mother. Menu standouts include the dollar-oyster happy hour special (no Blue Points here, instead, spend your money slurping up creamy Montauk Pearls); the “boards,” which come in cheese, meat, or veggie options, and are completed with a perfect hunk of She Wolf Bakery baguette; the melt-in-your-mouth charred leeks, accompanied by a rich and creamy sauce gribiche; and the boldly spiced and perfectly cooked sasso chicken. We could go on, but we won’t. Stop by for lunch, dinner, or even just happy hour and see for yourself. You’ll probably see us there too.
