The Restaurant Awards: Or, 10 Brooklyn Restaurants We Want to Talk About Right Now

Best food truck: Snowday
Brooklyn’s impressive fleet of food trucks satisfy cravings you never knew you had, for things like kimchi falafel quesadillas, BBQ pulled pork waffles, and wasabi mayo-gobbed french fries. But Snowday is the only one that offers “delicious, inspired menus with a side of social justice.” Essentially, it’s a mobile kitchen with a mission: To hire, educate and empower young people recently released from the prison system. The brainchild of Jordyn Lexton, a former teacher at Riker’s Island, all profits from the Vendy Award-winning truck are recycled into the organization Drive Change, which subsidizes re-entry programs that provide hands-on work experience for formerly incarcerated youth, and teach transferable skills. A maple syrup-themed menu makes the socially conscious concept even sweeter; think maple bacon glazed brussels sprouts, maple grilled cheese with sharp cheddar, syrup-shellacked smoked rib sliders, and beer battered maple onion rings, all served with seasonal pickled vegetables.
