New York’s Best Weekend for Biking Begins Today
It can be hard for cyclists in New York, what with all the tickets-for-legal-activities and crowded bike lanes and errant bottles of mustard being thrown at you. Life is tough for those of us on two wheels, you know? But things are actually looking up for city cyclists right now. First, Citi Bike is expanding to Red Hook and Park Slope. Second, the weather is finally making it possible to enjoy being on your bike, exposed to nature (or what passes for nature in this city). And third? Today is the kick-off of what is probably the best weekend for biking in New York City, thanks to the start of the two-day Bike Expo New York, and culminating Sunday with the Five Boro Bike Tour.
You don’t need to be registered for the Five Boro Bike Tour to go to Bike Expo (which is good, because registration closed ages ago), you just need to be interested in biking. The Expo features everything from classes teaching people—from kids to adults—how to ride, to a “blessing” of the bikes at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, to street skills classes, to learning how to fix a flat, to a Bike Expo after-party tonight at Brooklyn’s own Red Lantern Bicycles. Plus, even if you’re not into biking at all, Bike Expo has tons of food vendors and a beer garden with craft beer curated by Taste New York where you can hang out in and drunkenly fantasize about one day getting on a bike. Once you’ve, like, sobered up that is. Ride safe. Ride often. Just, uh, avoid getting a ticket. That would really suck.
Bike Expo New York runs May 1 (10am-8pm) to May 2 (9am-6pm) at Pier 36 at Basketball City (299 South Street, Manhattan)
