Gazelle Twin – “Anti Body”
The Swedish band The Knife stopped performing this year, tragically. Their massive influence over dark synth-pop was widely acknowledged while they were still active, but that comparison almost always overflattered the acts it was applied to, most of whom seemed like they started recording after listening to “Heartbeats” twice without a lyric sheet. So if Gazelle Twin’s excellent Unflesh veers a little too close to Karin Dreijer worship, Elizabeth Bernholz at least seems to get what made her so great. “Anti Body” expresses discomfort by causing it. This is pop that refuses idol worship as a worthy end-goal.
