Soft Glas: The Young Bed-Stuy Producer Has a Rich Musical Past and a Bright Future
EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE INSPIRED BY SOMETHING, RIGHT? And for Joao Gonzalez—the Cuban-born, Florida-bred, and now Brooklyn-based producer—that something is cheap sushi.
Or, at least, that’s what he was eating not only when he thought up stage name, Soft Glas, but also right before he wrote “I Need U (just because),” a snappy party gem that nods to his adolescent drumming days. Of course, Gonzalez undoubtedly also draws inspiration from his rich musical past; his father is Grammy-winning jazz pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, who was discovered at age 15 by Dizzy Gillespie, and composed and performed for the New York Philharmonic.
