Final Section of the High Line Opens September 21
The hippest, narrowest park in New York will soon be almost complete. According to a newsletter announcement from Friends of the High Line, the converted West Side rail line’s third and final leg will open later this month.
The last stretch of the High Line connects the park from Gansevoort Street all the way to 34th Street, meaning that tourists can blithely wander into the Meatpacking District from their Midtown hotels. The park will include more design features from Piet Oudolf, seating, and, of course, trees. The final leg opens on Sunday, September 21, just in time to enjoy the beginnings of some crisp fall weather.
The High Line began construction in 2006, and is now nearing completion. The only remaining section of the park to open is the 10th Avenue spur, connecting the High Line to the future 7 train stop and bringing it within striking distance of the Jacob Javits Convention Center. That part will open in 2015, and include a giant bowl-shaped “interior room.” Goody!
