Street Legal: Five Brooklyn Style Stars in Their Natural Environment
Nicolette MasonThe rather messy subjects of feminism and fashion don’t always pair perfectly together, but Nicolette Mason’s work, found mostly on her blog and in the pages of Marie Claire, where she is a contributing editor, combines them brilliantly. And now with a new line in sizes XS to 4X for the e-commerce label ModCloth, we can all be a little bit more like her.
Place of Birth:
Los Angeles.
Currently Resides:
Williamsburg.
Title:
It’s a laundry list: I’m a contributing editor and columnist at Marie Claire, a creative consultant, and a blogger at my own website. I also just designed my first collection for ModCloth, launching this October in sizes XS to 4X!
On how she got into fashion:
I studied design and management at Parsons the New School for Design, and while I was there I held a variety of fashion industry and design internships. Upon graduation, I started working full-time as a brand strategist at an international design firm, and while I was there I started my blog. My blog grew pretty organically from that point, and I started freelancing for a bunch of publications, including Vogue Italia, Refinery29, and even Brooklyn Magazine! It’s been a very surreal evolution, but I’m riding every wave as it comes towards me.
Favorite store in Brooklyn:
I think it’s a toss up between Catbird and Bird, because I obviously love animals. Catbird caters to my feminine whimsy with its delicate jewels and finely curated selection of accessories and makeup, where Bird is a serious fashion destination. I just picked up my new favorite bag by Mansur Gavriel from there, and their selection of Tsumori Chisato makes my heart happy.
Favorite article of clothing:
I’d be lost without a serious leather motorcycle jacket. My absolute favorite is a completely beaten-to-death cropped one I found in the clearance rack at Topshop for less than $60.
Best fashion advice she’s ever received:
Fuck the rules. Wear what you love.
Favorite neighborhood:
I really love Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO. I know it’s kind of a clichéd answer, but they’re so romantic. I lose my breath every time I lookout onto the skyline from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. My fiancé and I love taking the East River Ferry to Fulton Landing and walking aimlessly down there.
On what she’s most excited to wear this fall:
All the boots. I love Loeffler Randall’s booties the most, and every fall I treat myself to a new pair.
