Brooklyn Beer Bar Guide: The Moonlight Mile
Here is what we look for in a perfect bar. Good beer. Nice drinks. Friendly bartenders with mustaches and a sense of humor, willing to chat if you want to, but perfectly happy to let you along for a while, if that’s what you need to be. Big, gorgeous windows that let a breeze in. Somewhere low-key, a place that feels like a dive bar, but isn’t really a dive bar. The kind of place that makes you look around and think to yourself, “Hey, if I opened a bar, I’d want it to look just like this.” The Moonlight Mile, on Franklin Avenue in Greenpoint is that kind of place. Friendly, open, and relaxed, it’s a lovely addition to the neighborhood. Check it out, after the jump.
Number of Taps: The emphasis at this bar is the sweet selection of whiskeys, but they manage to make it worthwhile for all your friends who just can’t handle their brown liquor. There are 12 nicely-curated beers on tap, including some selections from Kalamazoo’s finest, Bell’s Brewing Company. For something that packs a punch but is also wonderful, I steer you right towards Bell’s Oberon. You won’t be disappointed.
Vibes: This is just a lovely, lovely place. Far enough from the teeming center of Greenpoint, this bar sits on a quiet corner of Franklin Avenue, with picture windows that open up on nice days to the streets outside. The bartenders are some of the friendliest guys in town, and the place is never too crowded, so it’s a great spot for any occasion that calls for a cold drink and good company.
Typical Crowd: The bar’s been open since March, which is just enough time to plant the seeds of buzz, so for right now, this is its sweet spot. Most of the people who come through are regulars, people who live in the neighborhood, and want a nice, reliable place to drink some whiskey and relax.
Music: There’s a jukebox, which is free, and stocked with a lot of 20th century rock, so, you know, anything that could conceivably fall into that category is fair game. Sometimes, the owners play records behind the bar, too.
Price: Reasonable! A beer will run you anywhere from $6-$9, and some of their craft cocktails get a little pricey, it’s worth it. They are delicious, and made with love. What more could you ask for, right?
Outdoor space: None really, to speak of, but sit by the window, people-watch, and you’ll find that it’s almost better.
Pet-friendly: Yes!
