Brooklyn Is Getting A Minor League Football Team
We’ve got the Nets, we’ve got the Cyclones and we’ve got a righteous roller derby team, but Brooklyn hasn’t had a football team since 1945 when the Brooklyn Dodgers/Tigers disbanded. But that’s all about to change: This week, it appears that Brooklyn is getting a minor league football team!
Now before you start freaking out about new Barclays-like stadiums going up, don’t. The Brooklyn Bolts (we approve!) will play at MCU Park in Coney Island, according to a Post source. The six-game season will be short, kicking off on October 8, and the hope is that college football players who were rejected during NFL training camp will turn to the newly-formed FXFL for a chance to continue playing. They may even be able to use the new league as a way of catching the eye of the same higher ups who rejected them in the first place.
What’s more, the FXFL—which also consists of teams from Boston, Omaha and Florida—may have their first game aired on the NFL Network (pending official NFL recognition) and they’re currently in talks to have games broadcast on New York’s SNY, the local sports network.
Players will make about $1,000 per game—at least until they hit the big times.
