Here’s a Map to Help You Celebrate National Donut Day the Brooklyn Way
As I was sitting at my makeshift office in Brooklyn Roasters this morning, it started to feel a little Groundhog’s Day. “Good morning.” “Good morning.” “Did you know it’s National Donut Day?” Cue purchase and shoving in face of Dough deliciousness. While the baristas and I agreed this must be a product of the thriving donut lobby forcing us to eat these circular godsends, we discovered a startling truth: started by the Salvation Army in 1938, the day is actually intended to commemorate the female volunteers who served behind the front lines during World War I by providing donuts to soldiers. It’s still celebrated on the first Friday in June, which means eating a donut today is nothing short of doing your patriotic duty.
Since we just really love donuts are all about being patriotic, we’ve provided you with a map below of your donut options this holiday. Brooklyn’s donut game is at an all time high, and there are plenty of places to celebrate. The aforementioned Dough is holding a raffle to win four free doughnuts a week for a year. Dun-Well is doing a free donut with any espresso drink purchase. Greenpoint’s beloved Peter Pan does not have a promotion, but we did discover that when you leave a comment on the site and print it out, you will receive one free donut when you purchase a dozen. It involves clicking on a picture of a glazed old fashioned, which you can do here.
Dunkin’ Donuts will also be providing a complimentary donut with beverage purchase, and Krispy Kreme is straight up giving out free ones. With the right determination and charged smart phone map, you can now spend your summer Friday eating the shit out of America.
