SmorgasBar Coming To Jones Beach
The food gods giveth and they taketh away: A few days after announcing that Brooklyn Flea’s Washington D.C. market had gone on an indefinite hiatus, the food festival company has shared the news that they’re launching a new project at Jones Beach: a quote-unquote SmorgasBar.
According to an update from owner Eric Demby on the Brooklyn Flea website, the new project will operate inside a shipping container from the unofficial start of summer (i.e. Memorial Day) to its unofficial end (i.e. Labor Day).
Lucky visitors will get to choose from 4-5 vendors. The current lineup includes Handsome Hank’s Fish Hut, specializing in fish & chips, clams, shrimp; Home Frite, the go-to place for Belgian-style fries and sausages; Rubirosa, home of delicious pizza and pasta; and the aptly-named Summers, featuring fresh juices and L.A.-style tacos.
Meanwhile, an adjacent bar will sling beers from Long Island breweries like Southampton Publick House and Greenport Harbor Brewing Company, alcoholic and non-alcoholic slushies from Kelvin Slush Co., and a raw seafood bar from Brooklyn Oyster Party.
Around the shipping container, visitors will also find “large tents for shade and eating and drinking, a sand play area with games such as badminton, bocce, and ping-pong, and special food events throughout the summer.”
From May 23 to June 15, SmorgasBar will be open to the public Friday through Sunday (plus Memorial Day Monday) with daily hours beginning after that and continuing through Labor Day. Business hours will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for now.
Given all this great news, perhaps New York Beach Bus should consider a line extension to Jones Beach…
