Senator Chuck Schumer Cares For Nerds, Wants Bus & Ferry For Brooklyn Techies
Who says the government doesn’t care?
Ask Senator Chuck Schumer and he’ll tell you it simply isn’t true. This week, the Democratic senator made a special appearance at Brooklyn Tech Triangle U to show just how much he cares. While there he heralded the virtues of the tech industry and called on Mayor De Blasio to step up and show the growing tech community more support. More specifically, he said Brooklyn needs a “nerd bus” and a “nerd boat.”
According to Crain’s New York, Sen. Schumer also went on to call for citywide free wi-fi (agreed) and more office towers in Brooklyn (meh).
As for the transportation, Sen. Schumer would like the MTA to add more bus routes to the roadways connecting Williamsburg/Greenpoint (the natural habitats of nerds) to the three points of the Brooklyn Tech Triangle (e.g. Dumbo, Downtown Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Navy Yards). He also wants a ferry that will connect the Brooklyn waterfront to the new Cornell tech campus on Roosevelt Island.
“We have to grow,” Senator Schumer said to the audience of tech bigwigs. “Businesses are running out of space, businesses that only want to grow in Brooklyn. You couldn’t get Etsy or Huge to move to Manhattan, Brooklyn is in their DNA.”
