Brooklyn Bridge Park Will Host Three Dance Parties In May
Between the opening day of Coachella and this news, we can officially say that outdoor dancing season is here!
Today, the Parks Department announced the lineup for this year’s Celebrate Brooklyn! dance parties in Brooklyn Bridge Park and we have to say, all three of them sound like a great time.
The Thursday night series kicks off on May 8 and will continue on May 15 and May 22 with the inaugural party sporting a global beat theme and featuring “transcendent pan-Mediterranean bacchanal” from Balkan Beat Box and DJ Joro Boro. Both acts have spent time in or around Gogol Bordello. On top of that, there will be free belly dancing lessons from Dance The Venus.
The May 15 show boasts the biggest names and will feature one of Japan’s greatest exports, Cibo Matto, as well as Javelin and musician JD Samson (of Le Tigre and MEN).
The final May 22 show will be Africa-themed and feature Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, a music group consisting of African refugees, and a set by Electrafrique with Chief Boima and DJ Underdog. Before this show, Iris Wilson of FELA! and Cumbe: Center for African and Diaspora Dance will lead a dance lesson.
All three parties will start at 7 p.m. and are free to attend. Better start limbering up now.
