A Dormant DUMBO Movie Theater Reopens Yet Again
The reRun movie theater in DUMBO has always been a great idea: pack Brooklynites into a room behind the popular reBar, sitting on repurposed car seats, and feed them craft beers and fancy popcorns while showing independent cinema that wouldn’t have a venue otherwise. But it’s always had a tough time catching on. The theater opened in 2010, its weeklong engagements curated by critic and distributor Aaron Hillis (who since went on to buy Video Free Brooklyn in Cobble Hill and become one of our 100 Most Influential People in Brooklyn Culture). Almost two years later, Hillis stepped down and the space went dormant, before coming back in November 2012 with IFP as a curatorial partner. “It’s too perfect a space to stay vacant for long,” Dan Schoenbrun told us at the time, but go vacant again it did.
But it’s reopening yet again, Matt Grady, the head of Brooklyn-based distributor Factory 25 (and another of our 100 Most Influential People in Brooklyn Culture), tells us. He’s already booked weeklong runs of four of his movies: Ape and Marvin, Seth and Stanley (which costars Alex Karpovsky) will run as a double feature from April 25 to May 1, then the nonfiction films Apocalypse: A Bill Cunningham Tour Film and Jobriath AD will run together from May 2 to May 8. But the first movie the theater will show in its new iteration will be Home, James, a movie Factory 25 has nothing to do with, because, Grady tells us, most of the programming will be done “in-house.” Well, whoever’s doing the programming, it’s just nice to have the theater back so we can finally see all the movies it’ll show! And have some beers while we do it…
