Everyone Is Very Upset About This Vogue Cover (And It Doesn’t Even Have Lena Dunham On It!)
Oh, Vogue. Just when you had won the collective hearts of everyone on the Internet by not excessively photoshopping Lena Dunham in her recent feature, you go and squander all that hard-earned adoration by putting none other than Kim Kardashian on the cover. Oh, Vogue. How could you?
First things first, at approximately I don’t know when but let’s call it 1pm EST, the April cover of Vogue was released into the world and the world was not having it. Why? Well, because the world didn’t want to see Kim Kardashian on the cover of hallowed fashion bible Vogue. Oh sure, there are some dissenters who love the cover, but most people are, you know, pretty upset. What’s the big deal, you wonder? Who cares about this kind of thing even a little bit? Isn’t this the same magazine to have once featured the Spice Girls? Isn’t this the same magazine to have been embroiled in a race-related controversy over a cover with LeBron James and Gisele Bundchen? Isn’t this ultimately just a fashion magazine whose cover subject choices really have little to no effect over any of our daily lives? (And, yes, I’ve seen both The Devil Wears Prada and The September Issue and, you know, work for a magazine, but still can’t bring myself to think of fashion magazines as all that important or think about a decision like the one to put Kim Kardashian on the cover as anything more than economically driven and slightly annoying, but mostly irrelevant to the rest of, like, my entire life.)
And so second of all? Calm down everyone. I get it that everyone hates Kim Kardashian. And that some people enjoyed the fact that Anna Wintour claimed not to allow just anyone to force their way onto a Vogue cover. But as we recently learned with the Scarlett Johansson profile in the New Yorker, even the magazines whose standards we want to revere are susceptible to publishing things that we might not like very much. It happens! You’ll get past it. Yes, the hashtag is idiotic. But, you know, Kardashian’s just a reality TV star. This is nowhere NEAR as bad as the time Vogue profiled Asma al-Assad, wife of Syrian dictator and mass murderer Bashir al-Assad. Plus, North West is really cute. Like, ridiculously so.
