A Primer: Brooklyn-Themed Bars, Restaurants, and Ukulele Shops In Foreign Countries
Bedford-Stuyvesant cafe, Amsterdam
Last month, Gothamist reported on the opening of an Amsterdam cafe simply called Bedford-Stuyvesant, partly as a nod to its neighborhood’s rapid process of gentrification, and partly as a way to emulate “the friendly atmosphere and service with a smile [the owners] encountered in Brooklyn and Bedford-Stuyvesant in particular.”
It’s got a play space for toddlers and is the only business in Europe serving Brooklyn Roasting Company beans, but has been met with a certain amount of skepticism, as from one local who told Gothamist, “They could have called it ‘New Berlin.’ Old-looking furniture is not just something you find in Brooklyn.” One interesting note: the cafe is actually located on Amsterdam’s Java St. (or Javastraat, if you’d rather).
