It Could Be Worse: Seven of New York’s All-Time Biggest Snow Storms
Christmas 2010
Boxing Day, technically, but this one’ll be remembered as a storm that massive threw off holiday travel, hitting squarely on December 26th. The city saw around 20 inches of snow which took forever to clean up, leading to a whole lot of criticism of Bloomberg’s response (and laying the groundwork for his hyper-vigilant stance on weather events thereafter). Reportedly, the Mayor had just laid off hundreds of sanitation workers due to budget cuts, straining the city’s resources. At the time, the Post also picked up a story about a man who attempted suicide by jumping from a Hell’s Kitchen window, but was saved by his landing on a huge pile of uncollected trash. Of course, that whole winter was a rough one (56 inches of snow, and that was just in January!), which leads us to the real point of this whole thing: yes, it’s awful outside, but like most things in life, it’s not as bad as it could be.
