A blizzard in 1996 finally broke it, and was considered the city’s second-biggest snow storm of all time (that whole year was a mess; according to the city, “the end of the 1995-1996 winter season, New York City had experienced 16 snowstorms and recorded more than 89 inches of snow”). Then along came 2006, which dumped 26.9 inches of snow in Central Park, a new record.
