The Terrible People Who Wore Terrible 9/11 Halloween Costumes Apologize (Terribly)
Call us crazy, but here in Brooklyn, we celebrate Halloween by dressing up like our favorite Internet memes, not like the victims of terrorist attacks. However in places other than Brooklyn, places that are not even in America, it is apparently a thing to dress up like a tragic event that cost thousands of people their lives, devastating the lives of thousands more people. And not only that, but it is precisely this type of costume that wins contests! What is wrong with people?
Over in England, two college-age women entered (and won!) a Halloween costume contest by dressing as the flaming North and South Towers of the World Trade Center, after they’d been hit by commercial jets. Once photos of the two young women went viral and were widely condemned, they issued a non-apology apology, saying that they were “sorry if they caused any offence” and that “the idea was to depict a serious, modern-day horror that happened in our lifetime and was not intended as a joke.” Which, really? They dressed up this way for a pub’s Halloween contest and it was not intended as a joke? We might be American, but how stupid do they think we are? And while I guess it’s probably not all that surprising that people who are shitty enough to wear Halloween costumes that reference the deaths of thousands of people would also come up with pretty shitty apologies, still, we’re disappointed. At least the idiot who dressed up like a victim from the Boston Marathon bombing apologized in a sincere way. Still though, it bears repeating, what is wrong with these people? I think the real lesson here is, when in doubt, always dress up as Grumpy Cat.
