Five Fall Weekend Trips To Get You Out of Brooklyn
Shelter Island
This one will take a little more planning (and probably a little more money, too). And though it’s most often seen as a summer getaway (and a more laid back Long Island alternative to the Hamptons), Shelter Island still has a lot to offer this time of year, with fewer crowds getting in the way of the peaceful scenery. Hotels like the Chequit Inn and the Ram’s Head Inn are open year round (as opposed several on the island that are seasonal only) and serve up predictably exceptional seafood. Best consumed in between bike trips around the island and long walks on the stunning Mashomack Preserve, one of the most formidable wildlife habitats in the entire northeast, and a nice place to visit a few turtles and rare birds before the entire tri-state area is blanked in snow and wintry mix for the next four to six months.
