This Is Their Jam: Playlists for 10 Iconic Fictional Characters
Eli Schwartz from Adam Wilson’s Flatscreen: Listen here.
The Replacements – “If Only You Were Lonely”
Wilson’s novel is heavy on making funny shit happen out of tragedy and loneliness. Are Westerberg and Wilson two peas in a pod? We think so.
Modest Mouse – “Exit Does Not Exist”
Schwartz feels stuck. Really stuck. And apathetic, sometimes angry. Do you remember a time when Isaac Brock had a good day? Me neither.
X – “Adult Books”
Schwartz and his best friend, ex-actor-turned-paraplegic sex addict Seymour J. Kahn, find relative fame on YouTube. I hope they make a video to this song sometime in the near future.
Weezer – “The World Has Turned and Left Me Here”
Remember when you were 20 and you felt like no one ever had your back? In one scene, Schwartz wakes up on his high school’s football field with a Viagra boner. I hope that if there’s a film adaptation of the novel the producers choose this song.
Morrissey – “King Leer”
Morrissey is one of the funniest sad guys out there, and this song about buying a chihuahua for a girl he can’t have is one of the funniest things ever. So is Wilson.
