A Literary Pub Crawl: 10 Books to Read in 10 Brooklyn Bars
Berlyn
“The seasons and the years came and went…day by day hour by hour, with every beat of the pulse, one lost more and more of one’s qualities, became less comprehensible to oneself, increasingly abstract.”
I think, sometimes, that there is no better state to appreciate artistry than in a state of total inebriation. This is when your emotions are closest to the surface, this is when you are most receptive to everything it is that the author is trying to convey. And so, if you’re at all intoxicated while reading this masterwork by Sebald, you are in for quite an experience, because this book is a tragically beautiful study of memory and loss and identity that pretty much tears your heart out in the worst possible way. Which, of course, is also the best possible way. And there’s no better place to be than in a German restaurant that is not at all in Germany. Berlyn fits the bill perfectly.
What to drink:Try one of the beautifully crafted cocktails like the Berlyn Im Frühling (genever, gin, elderflower, lemon juice, Peychaud’s bitters) or the Lustgarden (Riesling, pear brandy, sparking Grüner Veltliner, cucumber) and drink up.
