Achilles Heel
“A man moves through time. It means nothing except that, like a harpoon, once thrown he will arrive.”
Ah, this book. This book! It’s plotted loosely around the mythology of Hercules and the monster Geryon, but it is really one of the most painful, beautiful, volcanic love stories ever written, with the kind of gorgeous poetic language that just brings you to your knees. Yes. You will be on your knees over this book, and you will be jelped if you have a drink in hand, or even two. Achilles Heel is the natural bar in which to read this book because, well, there’s the Greek connection, sure, but also, it’s right on the water in Greenpoint, and so after reading and drinking you can hop on the East River ferry and imagine you’re headed off to a tiny Greek island to find the kind of tortured, imperfect love that makes life worth living.
What to drink: Hemingway daiquiri because they are sweet and go down easy and Geryon is just a child—a monster and a child
