Sunny’s Is Officially Coming Back To Red Hook

After months of repairs and extensive fundraising (they had both a Kickstarter campaign and a benefit at the Bell House to help with more than $100,000 of necessary work), historic (and beloved bar) Sunny’s is opening back up at the end of the month, Brooklyn Paper reports.
After taking on the damage that comes with five feet of flood water during Sandy last October, the bar, which has been in the neigbhorhood since 1890, is now set to re-open on August 29th. The date has special significance, as it also happens to be co-owner Sunny Balzano’s 78th birthday. “I never considered that we wouldn’t get here,” Balzano told the paper.
As a nod to the community support that helped them open back up, Balzano announced plans to paint the facade of the bar into a blackboard where customers can sign their names. Doesn’t totally ease the blow of losing Jackie’s 5th Amendment, but it’s very welcome news nonetheless.
