Which Mayoral Candidate Is the Legit “Bike Candidate”?
Bill de Blasio
Last summer, the Post reported that “Public Advocate Bill de Blasio is refusing to go along with the city’s aggressive program for rolling out bike lanes and pedestrian plazas, describing Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan as a ‘radical’ for pushing those initiatives so hard.” Instead, he preferred an “incremental” approach. IF NOT NOW WHEN, BILL? When more cyclists die in preventable accidents? (At the time, the president of Transportation Alternatives accused de Blasio of being beholden to a well-heeled anti-bike lane lobby.) Now that de Blasio’s in the thick of a campaign, his views, like Obama’s on same-sex marriage, have evolved. Well, bully for him, I guess. But it smacks of at best of opportunism rather than sincerity, at worst of past cowardice. [photo]
