First Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum
This month’s First Saturday just happens to fall on Fourth of July weekend, and it promises to be an awesome day, with performances by the Hungry March Band (a street brass band that “performs a fusion of influences ranging from New Orleans street bands to Indian wedding brass”) and a late afternoon into evening music showcase that will “trace American music from blues to hip-hop.” In addition to all that good stuff, there’s a dance performance by the Redhawk Native American Arts Council and a short film program in the evening. Plus—and quite apropos following the holiday—there will be a talk by artist Valerie Hegarty about her installation Alternative Histories, which challenges our ideas of what really happened in the American past, and covers topics like manifest destiny, colonizations, and segregation. And? It’s all free!
