New York Sea Monsters: A Guide
This Shark I Saw At Coney Island
Actual footage of this has been lost to time (and un-backed-up cell phones past), but in the summer of 2010, I was swimming at Coney Island. A few feet a way from a shark. For, like, a good chunk of time, before everyone realized what was going on and ran (or took those awkward, leap-y giant steps you do when you’re in the water) ashore. Aaaaah! It turned out to be some kind of ailing baby shark washing itself up on the beach to die, but the lesson has stuck with me: Coney Island is not safe from sharks, or any other kind of fish. Nowhere is safe.
