Northside Film: The DIY Competition Shortlist Has Arrived!
Northside Film (June 17-20) is quickly approaching, and with it, the Northside DIY Film Competition. Yes, our annual cinematic thunder dome is back, in which filmmakers go toe-to-toe to compete for over $10,000 in cash and prizes, including a special screening at Nitehawk Cinema. If you’re new to the Northside Film DIY Competition (or just need a refresher), here’s how it works. From Monday, June 17 until Thursday, June 20, we’ll screen four semi-final features and ten semi-final shorts. The grand prize for the best feature will be determined by our illustrious jury and the grand prize for best short will be determined by you, the audience members. Let’s take a look at our semi-finalists, shall we?
Semi-final features: Wisdom Teeth, Be Good, FUREVER and Follow the Leader.
Semi-final shorts: Spoils, Extraordinary Harvest, Flyer Boy, Downtown, I Hear You, Skin and Bones, Epilogue, Campers, Flo, The Hunting Trip, and Tremblor.
And of course, Northside Film is still your source for New York Premieres, repertory picks documentaries and more. Let’s take a look at some of what our curatorial partners have put together.
We’re pleased to announce the New York Premiere of Swim Little Fish Swim. Directed by Ruben Amar and Lola Bessis, Swim Little Fish Swim stars Dustin Guy Defa, the director of 2011 Northside DIY Competition entry, Bad Fever. Defa plays an irresponsible husband living in a tiny Chinatown apartment with his wife; the precarious balance of their lives is nearly overturned when Lilas, a 19 year old French artist moves in with the couple.
indieWIRE proudly presents the Brooklyn Premiere of Byzantium. From Neil Jordan, director of Interview With a Vampire, Byzantium tells the tale of a young woman’s entrance into the world of vampiric legends.
Women Make Movies presents a sneak peek screening of Forbidden Voices, the story of Yoani Sánchez, Zeng Jinyan and Farnaz Seifi, female bloggers from Cuba, China and Iran, respectively. Forbidden Voices accompanies these three cyberfeminists as they work to build international awareness for women’s rights and risk punishment from their dictatorial regimes.
