The Pulaski Bridge: A Brief and Strange History
The bridge opened to traffic in September 1954, the Times reported. It replaced the old Vernon Avenue Bridge, which had brought traffic across Newtown Creek for 49 years. The new bridge was 16 feet taller, meaning it would have to be opened less frequently for creek traffic, and also 28 feet wider (plus the “eight-foot sidewalk on its west side.”) [photo]
