Brooklyn’s Former Speakeasies
Monte’s Venetian Room
This famous and very old Gowanus Italian restaurant, shuttered in 2008 and reopened last year, opened originally as Angelo’s in 1906 and functioned as a speakeasy during prohibition—”with a chute to the basement in case the staff needed to dispose of bottles ahead of a police raid,” according to Monte’s website.
