Inside The Offices Of Nifty Thrifty, Williamsburg’s Mecca For Online Thrifting
With a small but growing team of buyers and sylists, the Nifty Thrifty model is based around a series of themed “flash sales” on their site, along with a running collection of “archived” pieces, all lovingly catalogued and photographed at their in-house studio, which includes a corner Luciani has designated for staff yoga.
“We collect ideas from lookbooks, we watch street style, and then we look for patterns in what we’re finding from our suppliers and how that matches current trends,” said buyer Hanny Ahern of the selection process. “With vintage, it won’t always match trends exactly, but it can also line up perfectly.”
Clothing is pulled from a loyal series of stores and suppliers nationwide (“Once you start spending money, people remember you,” notes Luciani), and while a good portion of their online clientele is actually based in New York, Ahern adds, “We actually try not to buy in Brooklyn. We like to support local businesses, but you also don’t want to be buying and then turning around and re-selling your neighbor’s stuff.”
