Which NYC MFA Program Is Right For You?
The New School has some impressive faculty like Jonathan Ames, Susan Cheever, and David Lehman, which, notice a trend here? New York colleges will ALWAYS have impressive faculty because there is such a wealth of creative people living in this city. They’re everywhere! However, the New School has a similar situation to Columbia in that it has very large class sizes, low levels of funding for students and the good old high cost of living specific to New York. Another point about the New School is that it is not ranked in terms of how selective it is. This is a huge issue in the whole MFA debate. Private universities that charge ungodly amounts of money to bestow an art degree on a person won’t even release their selectivity criteria. Are they just admitting anyone who will pay? It’s hard to say for sure, but it does make you wonder about the value of that $100,000+ degree.
