Which NYC MFA Program Is Right For You?
Hunter College has a relatively new MFA program—it’s only been in place since 1999—but has steadily been building a solid reputation, particularly in its non-fiction program. And although very few students receive much in the way of funding, Hunter is a part of the public City University of New York, and its fees are relatively low. At least, they are compared to a private university, which, well, everything in this world seems cheap compared to a private university. Even a gold-plated army of personal robot slaves seems cheap compared to the cost of a private university. Anyway, Hunter has some wonderful writers on staff including Nathan Englander, Claire Messud, Colum McCann, and Peter Carey (among those, only Englander has his MFA, from the University of Iowa.) Hunter is known for its small class sizes and individualized attention, which is also different from NYU or Columbia or the New School.
