The 10 Worst Brooklynites of All Time
Paterno grew up on E. 23rd Street between S and T, in Sheepshead Bay. But you know him best as a Pennsylvanian, as the popular Penn State football coaching legend who led the team for 46 seasons, winning a record number of games. Or, you know him as the head of a department mired in scandal after Paterno’s former assistant Jerry Sandusky was accused of raping underage boys, a crime for which he was convicted last month—on 45 counts. Paterno quickly retired and died as the crimes surfaced, after being criticized—at best—for a “failure of leadership.” At worst, he may have been involved in encouraging others not to report the incidents to authorities. When someone suggested renaming E. 23rd Street in honor of the coach, the local community board voted “um, no.”
