Wendell Cooper is Amazing
Most choreographers hone their craft in one style of dance, but Wendell Cooper—who lives in Bed-Stuy and recently completed a residency at Manhattan’s Dance Theater Workshop—specializes in fusing his many aesthetic, cultural and academic influences. These include the hip-hop group he formed growing up in Pittsburgh, studies in dance and religion at George Washington, energy bodywork training, traveling with Brooklyn choreographer Nicholas Leichter’s Obama-themed revision of The Whiz, and a similarly dazzling cabaret series. “I am exploring how telepresence and shamanic travel are related,” he told us. “The residency made me realize this multidimensional interdisciplinary work is my medium.”
