Home Births Are the New Plaid
Parts of Brooklyn over the last decade have, at times, resembled a prairie frontier, as gingham-clad, mustachioed youth tried their hand at such chores as pickling, chicken farming and the distillation of hard liquor. Now, though, the ultimate DIY, cabin-approved undertaking is the home birth. Seriously! Thoughtful Brooklynites, seeking alternatives to the increasingly bottom line-driven defensive medicine of mainstream obstetrics, now have every chance to have the natural birth they want, right here in Brooklyn. Doulas abound across the borough, with fine outfits like Push Love and Carriage House offering support throughout the birth experience; and now that midwives don’t have to be affiliated with hospitals, the opportunity for a truly independent, natural birth is better than ever. (And please don’t call this a trend.)
